A diary based on my latest attempts to get a job; this time in Munich. I'm an engineering graduate (and chartered engineer) with more than 10 years' experience in IT. Over five of these years have been spent in team leading and project management roles both in the UK and abroad.

Monday, Tuesday, whatever

Monday

Applied for a job, "a job" as in one job. And that was a job posted on the Friday afternoon after I had stopped looking.

This was really just going through the motions, it wasn't a good match and I didn't bother to phone the agency.

Tuesday (today)

Only looked this morning but didn't see any suitable jobs.

Was, however, emailed by an agency for a contract management role which might fit. I phoned them but they were busy so I sent them an email.

I was also phoned by the client for the job in Singapore. We had a very good chat but I had the feeling that they weren't going to select me ("we'll get back to you in a week ... we might also consider you for other roles"). Funny chat, it went a bit off interview (questions about the seaside town in which I live, discussions about languages etc). Must remember to close the window before I do telephone interviews. The interviewer could hear seagulls in the background.

Total applications this week: 2

First of all, since you never know who's going to read this, put some more personal and professional information in your BLOG. Why not?

I'm assuming you're posted on Monster.com but, if your not, do it now.

I was a victim of the telecom debacle. I've been working for nine months contract now and grateful for it. I have a family and over 20 years of experience. What I discovered, after being out of work for about a year, is that sometimes there just aren't any jobs advertised in your area of expertise. Not the case in IT land though.

Three things you need to do: network, network and network. I don't care if its with the painter. Let everyone know who you are, what you do and that your looking. I do admire your flexibility in location. That should help. Be willing to finance your own relocation if necessary.

Target specific companies that you know have job openings in your area. Pester them until they have to interview you.

A lot of this is just luck I'm afraid. I've really gotten more hits off of Monster than anywhere else.

PS You could probably get a gig in Iraq ;-o
